Why state of residence matters after service
Where you establish legal residence after leaving the military can affect your finances for decades. States differ widely in how they treat military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, and Survivor Benefit Plan payouts for state income tax purposes. Some states exempt all military retirement income, some exempt none, and others fall somewhere in between with partial exemptions or income thresholds. States also differ on whether veterans qualify for property tax exemptions (sometimes tied to a disability rating), discounted or waived vehicle registration fees, hiring preference for state government jobs, and additional education benefits layered on top of federal programs like the GI Bill. None of these differences show up on a DD214 — you have to look them up state by state, which is what this tracker is built to do.
How to use this tool
Use Browse All States to search or scroll through every state's benefit summary one at a time, or switch to Compare States to select up to five states and view them side-by-side in a single table. Expand any state's card for details on income tax treatment, property tax exemptions, vehicle registration, employment preference, and education benefits, along with a link to that state's official veterans affairs office. Some entries are flagged as potentially outdated — when you see that warning, treat the listed rule as a starting point and confirm it directly with the state before relying on it.
Frequently asked questions
Does every state tax military retirement pay?
No. States vary from a full exemption on military retirement income, to a partial exemption (often with a dollar cap or age requirement), to full taxation with no special treatment. This tracker labels each state's general treatment, but exact rules and thresholds should be confirmed with that state's tax authority.
Are property tax exemptions available to all veterans?
It depends on the state. Many property tax exemptions are limited to veterans with a service-connected disability rating, and some are reserved for veterans rated Permanent and Total (P&T). Where a state's exemption is limited that way, this tracker marks it accordingly, but eligibility rules and application deadlines vary and should be verified with the local assessor's office.
How often does this state benefit data change?
State legislatures amend veteran benefit statutes regularly, so treatment that was accurate one tax year can change the next. This tool is meant for early planning and comparison only — always confirm current rules with the state's veterans affairs office or tax agency before making a decision about where to establish residency.
