How the window is calculated
The DoD SkillBridge program authorizes up to 180 days of civilian work experience immediately before your Final Active Duty Date (FADD), during which you remain on active duty and continue receiving full pay and benefits. This calculator counts backward from your FADD: your requested duration (capped at your branch's policy maximum, typically 180 days) determines your start date, and your window always ends the day before your FADD.
Branch policy sets the ceiling, but your command sets the floor — final approval for timing, duration, and the specific employer program always rests with your chain of command and servicing S1/G1/J1.

Is SkillBridge the same as terminal leave?
No. SkillBridge is a duty status where you work with an approved civilian employer while still on active duty, drawing full military pay and benefits. Terminal leave is separate — accrued leave taken at the very end of service. Some members combine a short terminal leave period after their SkillBridge window ends.
How far in advance should I apply?
Most SkillBridge employer programs recommend applying 90–120 days before your intended start date, since program cohorts and interview cycles fill up early.
Can every branch use the full 180 days?
Policy caps vary slightly by branch and are subject to change — this tool applies the published maximum for your branch, but your command can still limit your specific window based on mission requirements.
